The development of tissue mimics from non-animal sources will greatly increase research productivity in biomedical sciences. Specifically, tissue mimics are being developed to increase drug screening efficiency, to better understand complex mechanisms of disease, and to create implantable tissues to replace diseased or worn-out organs. Therefore, better tissue mimics will lead to more pharmaceutical drugs candidates, new treatments for complex diseases such as cancer and non-human sources of donor organs.
