Current evidences support a benefit for dairy bioactive nutrients against inflammatory reactions. Although the specific mechanisms underlying these effects have not been fully elucidated, convincing evidences support the hypothesis that dairy components, such as fat and proteins, actively impact the release of pro-inflammatory molecules. Further, earlier mechanistic studies have investigated the beneficial effects of individual dairy fat and proteins on inflammation. However, the possibility that these bioactive molecules synergise together has never been studied. The long-term objective of the proposed research program is to characterize the combined actions of novel bioactive nutrients on inflammation in mammals and to define the required food enrichment. The next five-year objective is to determine whether macronutrient components, present specifically in dairy fats and proteins/amino acids, can individually, additively or synergistically, regulate inflammatory reactions. We will use genomics and metabolomics technologies to identify the molecular signatures and the mechanism of action of components of dairy products on inflammation indicators in cultured cells. Based on our pilot work, this research initiative may lead to the identification of highly protective fat/protein combination(s), and we anticipate that future directions will involve in vivo validations steps. Together, these in vitro studies will help to better understand the mechanisms of action of dairy bioactive molecules on inflammatory reactions. The targeted suppression of various pro-inflammatory cytokines in relevant tissues represents an exciting new opportunity for supplements or functional ingredients for animal and human intake. Further, the use of innovative OMICs technologies will increase our knowledge on the beneficial molecular effects of bioactive molecules. Taken together, this NSERC program will allow us to bring innovative and competitive products with optimal combination of bioactive components to the marketplace. Such a research program will promote the development and expansion of research in the field of nutrigenomics and food science in the country and will enhance the training of HQPs who will go on to positively impact the Canadian economy and Canadian-based research and discovery.
