Operations and Maintenance Support for the Centre for Microbial Chemical Biology

The Centre for Microbial Chemical Biology (CMCB) at McMaster University provides infrastructure and service to support discovery and applied research at the interface of Chemistry and Biology. It includes equipment to support chemical research (small molecule organic synthesis, natural product purification and characterization), analysis of biological and chemical samples (metabolomics, experimental pharmacology, biophysical measurement), biological research (cell growth in BSL11 and BSL2, protein purification, enzymology), and high throughput compound screening (identification of chemical probes of biology, support for preclinical drug discovery). The CMCB is a unique facility thatsupports the research programs of 88 McMaster investigators and 595 associated trainees in addition to 19 investigators from other Canadian Universities and 6 companies. Trainees are instructed and supervised on the use of 66 individual pieces of equipment by four MSc and PhD trained staff members under the guidance of a PhD lab manager. Staff also maintain equipment, perform experiments for investigators, and provide general support for experimental setup and planning. The CMCB was founded in 2009 and has generated research published in the top journals in Chemistry and Biology (Nature, Science, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA,Nature Chem.l Biol, Nature Biotech, Nature Commun. Cell Chemical Biology, Cell Reports, Cell System, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., ACS Chem Biol, ACS Infec. Dis, and many others), 11 patents, and served to train undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers in interdisciplinary investigations. This Operations and Maintenance Support proposal will serve to offset costs of CMCB service and staff in support of the research programs of 105 Canadian laboratories.
