Researchers at the Cold Regions Research Centre (CRRC), Wilfrid Laurier University (Laurier) have inventednovel modifications to the design of thermosyphons that allows cost effective deployment of these devices tospecific locations where permafrost thaw is damaging infrastructure such as buildings, pipelines, and roads.The new thermosyphon design is relatively simple, operates from renewable sources of energy, and can beinstalled by non-specialised personnel. Over the last five years, several thermosyphon designs have been testedat the Scotty Creek Research Station (SCRS). The present design represents a culmination of extensive testingand modification. The researchers would like to make these devices available to governments and industrythroughout the circumpolar region. The proposed project funds will be used to assess the market opportunityfor novel thermosyphon technology by hiring a market research professional.
