My group's research combines physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, and information science to better understand the role of the cytoskeleton, especially in the context of cancer biology and neuroscience. The key challenge is to develop a consistent modeling framework to transfer data between time and size scales, from molecules to proteins to cells to tissues, accounting for the effects of a single molecular event on the behaviour of a whole cell or tissue.I propose computer modeling aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms of cancer and neurological processes, including the effects of drugs. I will focus on the cytoskeleton, which is a key component of human cells. At least three functions of the cytoskeleton are well studied: the effect on the mechanical strength of the cell, the mediation of cell division, and the transport of molecules in the cell via motor proteins. My computer models will provide additional insight into the role of the cytoskeleton in cancer and in the brain. By developing these models, I aim to understand, and ultimately devise a means to control, the behaviour and function of living cells.
