Climate change impacts in the Hudson Bay region

The Hudson Bay region is particularly susceptible to the effects of a warming climate. Sea ice distribution and duration is a key driver of the regional climate. Past research has indicated that sea ice is both disappearing and will continue to disappear and will virtually disappear within the next century. This area has been identified as one of the most sensitive regions in the world to climate change which result in a dramatically different climate. This has broad implications on the physical geography, biota and human populations of the region. The research objectives addressed in this research are, 1) the extension of the sea ice record to the decades before 1969 (and satellite reconnaissance) using temperature variability as a proxy, 2) the updating of the climate change projections for the region using state of the science coupled climate models and available downscaling techniques and 3) the assessment of impacts of climate change on the physical environment and human infrastructure of the First Nations and Inuit communities in the Hudson Bay and surrounding areas, focussing on food security and transportation safety.The successful completion of this research will provide the essential elements of a climate change impact assessment of the Hudson Bay region and enable better preparation for necessary adaptive strategies for local populations.
