The aim of this project is to develop a low cost rapid screening assay suitable for the detection andidentification of opioid and other drug analogs (e.g. fentanyl and its derivatives) in complex samples. Theresearch is specifically targeted at developing a new technology for implementation in harm reductionstrategies, in order to reduce loss of life from dangerous drug cocktails that are increasingly common in streetdrugs. The technique of paper spray mass spectrometry will be employed, whereby small paper strips serve asboth the sampling device and the platform for introducing the sample directly to a mass spectrometer. Thisdirect mass spectrometry approach removes the need for complex sample handling, and provides definitive andquantitative chemical information for small samples in approximately one minute. LifeLabs is an excellentpartner for this project, and their commitment to improving drug screening approaches in British Columbia(and Canada) will ensure the rapid future development and implementation of our research.
