Red Dog Enterprises, Ltd. is a Manitoba-based company interested in promoting the use of Red OsierDogwood (Cornussericea also known as Cornus stolonifera) extracts in animal feed due to their high content ofphenolic compounds and their antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. The Red OsierDogwood extract has been obtained, however, the extraction method has not been optimized to ensure thatmaximum yield of phenolics in the extract is achieved. Moreover shelf-life properties have not been evaluatedfor the resultant powdered extracts. Red Dog Enterprises Ltd. will need this information in order to completethe registration of the product with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Feed Section before it can bemarketed worldwide. Optimization of phenolic levels and completion of shelf life studies by the University ofManitoba will enable registration of the product. It is anticipated that registration of the product will openopportunities for Red Dog Enterprises Ltd. to create jobs in production, harvesting and marketing of Red OsierDogwood extracts. Plans have already been drawn with an Italian company to provide Red Dog EnterprisesLtd. with a machine that will be modified at PAMI (Prairie Agricultural Machinery Institute) for harvesting ofthe plant. Red Dog Enterprises Ltd. already has patents in Canada, the USA and the EU. One Chinese companyhas also expressed interest in this product. Red Osier Dogwood powder extracts can potentially be used asingredients in both animal feed and human food once confirmation tests are done and registration is completed.
