Validating a novel advanced mapping technology for safe and compliant drone operations

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) has been approached by AirMarket Inc. to validate thespatial accuracy of their FLY-SAFE technology. This software package is aimed at improving safety andcompliance in the drone industry by changing the way regulatory and site assessment information is accessedby the public and professional drone users. The project will initially focus on developing a comprehensivesampling strategy for accuracy validation. Next, multiple sample points will be selected across Canada, andpoint positions will be measured using the FLY-SAFE software. Coordinates provided by the software will becompared with those derived from conventional air navigation charts, as well as information from the NAVCANADA Designated Airspace Handbook, where applicable. The project aims to provide confidence that thespatial accuracy of the points measured using the software meets or exceeds stated tolerances, and that XY(lateral) positional information can consistently be derived to a higher level of accuracy than is possible usingexisting products, such as small-scale navigational charts.
