Measuring Emerging Contaminants in Drinking Water and its Sources

In Canada, public demand for high quality water and stringent regulations are the main drivers for the investigation of alternatives to conventional treatment processes. The requested equipment (a gas chromatograph with mass spectrometer detector, GC/MS) will replace a well-worm and obsolete unit and be used to ensure the timely continuation of research on advanced and emerging technologies (e.g. membranes and/or advanced oxidation processes, AOPs, as well as biofiltration) to minimize the concentrations of man-made materials including pharmaceutically active compounds (PhAC) and perfluorinated substances (PFs), as well as natural substances that contribute to the taste and odour (T&O) of finished drinking water. It will also be used to help further minimize the occurrence and concentration of potentially toxic byproducts of the reactions of these compounds and disinfectants that are applied to drinking water to eliminate waterborne disease. In doing so, it will support the interdisciplinary training of more than 30 HQP in 4 research groups and be of significant benefit to the health and well being of Canadians.
