The company specific problem in this project is to realize a coupled electro-mechanical radial tester for**stretchable electronics. The design of such a system requires a wide range of stretchable conductors, which will**be fabricated by the academic partner. The project is a partnership between Biomomentum Inc, a 100%**Canadian manufacturer of multiaxial mechanical testers, and Prof. Fabio Cicoira (Polytechnique Montréal), an**expert in flexible/stretchable electronics.**Coupled electro-mechanical testers are presently unavailable on the market. Biomomentum, already**well-known worldwide for mechanical testers, wants to become the first company to offer such a product.**Flexible, stretchable and transparent electronic materials are playing a central role in a myriad of novel**applications that are expected to become ubiquitous in our society, such as artificial muscles and skin, smart**textiles, biomedical devices, prosthetics and flexible displays. Progress in electronics for these new fields**comes after decades of intense research and development in materials science, which have resulted in materials**combining properties that are often mutually exclusive. For instance, materials showing high mechanical**compliance, conductivity and transparency are now a reality.**To assist Biomomentum in its effort design and conceive a coupled electro-mechanical tester, in this project we**will design and fabricate a prototype of the instrument and use it to test several stretchable electronic materials**over a wide range of mechanical strength and electrical conductivity.**The expected impact of this project will be: (i) helping Biomomentum to become a world-leading supplier of**electro-mechanical testers, (ii) producing new Canadian expertise in stretchable electronics, (iii) training highly**qualified personnel who will be in high demand from both academia and industry, (iv) bridging the gap**between academia and industry by fostering a new research partnership between the participants.
