Some Canadian West Coast tree leaves contain a natural plant secondary metabolite that is a good candidate for a naturally-sourced pesticide. This proposal aims to develop a practical and scalable method for purification of this natural compound from a common tree species in coastal British Columbia. This project is supported and facilitated by Ecosafe Natural Products Inc., a small R & D company based near Victoria, B.C, that specializes in formulation, product development and analysis of natural products. The work will be carried out in our laboratory at the University of Victoria, but in close collaboration with Ecosafe in order to integrate their expertise in large-scale purification of natural compounds. The long-term aim of the work is to test the pesticidal and antibiotic properties of the natural compound. Therefore, by developing an efficient strategy for purification, we will be able to obtain sufficient pure natural compound to carry out a suite of bioassays and tests against pest insects and microbes. These assays will be carried out in the next phase of the work. Ultimately, we intend to characterize the bioactive properties, stability, and efficacy of this natural product, and to evaluate its potential as a commercial natural pesticide.**
