Forests cover a large proportion of Canada's land area, and forest health is of concern to all Canadians. Understanding how forest trees defend themselves against herbivory and other stresses is therefore an important practical and scientific goal. This proposal describes a program of research on defense-related phenolic metabolism in Populus (poplars and aspens). Poplar contains abundant bioactive phenolic secondary metabolites, and is a model for tree biologists. In Canada, poplars and aspens are important forest trees.
