Around the world, more than 3,000 people die daily due to traffic crashes. In Canada, traffic crashes result in 2,500 fatalities and 15,000 serious injuries every year. Distraction is estimated to cause 13 to 50% of all crashes. In-vehicle devices such as smartphones raise additional concerns regarding driver distraction. However, these devices also have the potential to improve safety by informing drivers of risky driving behaviours or upcoming roadway events. This research will compare traditional and emerging in-vehicle technologies (e.g., smartwatches) with respect to driver distraction as well as their potential to improve safety when information content is driving related.
