Performance requirements of modern building envelopes are becoming much more demanding. As we reduce**thermal transmittance through the building assemblies, any liquid water that shows up in the building assembly**becomes a serious performance management issue. A water resistive barrier (WRB) is a thin membrane that is**designed to resist liquid water that has found its way behind the exterior cladding.Based on the literature**review, it has been determined that the current test methods are very subjective and there is a need for**developing a better, more precise and quantifiable method for testing the liquid water resistance of WRBs. The**primary objective of this research project is to develop a sensor which will be able to differentiate between**water vapor and liquid water and then quantify the liquid water leakage rate through WRBs. The outcomes**from this research project will help improve the moisture management performance of exterior building**envelopes by providing realistic, reliable and accurate information regarding the characteristics of WRBs for**building envelope applications.
