Mammalian cell cultures have become the dominant technology for the production of biological therapeutics. These cultures are also increasingly used for the research and development of novel immunotherapies and stem cell therapies, used to treat injuries and chronic diseases. The great promise of these emerging treatments comes with great challenges, many of those in the field of cell culture process engineering. ******The long-term goal of this program is to enable safer and more economical manufacture of mammalian cell products. This will be achieved by recently developed technologies to perform novel research that will increase the understanding of cell culture processes. We should thereby contribute both to accelerated process development as well more effectively optimized bioprocesses. This will include work in the relatively simple context of mammalian cell protein manufacturing, as well as the more complex analysis of therapeutic cell cultures. In particular, improved process analytical technologies will be developed to greatly increase the high-throughput analysis of mammalian cell culture populations and accelerate the selection of specific cells that are most suitable for manufacturing.******The development of reliable and economical means of mammalian cell manufacturing is essential to ensure that many promising emerging health care technologies actually become widely available to the patients who need them. Ultimately, increased access to safe and affordable cell culture products will improve the quality of many thousands of Canadian lives. UBC and Canadian multidisciplinary groups are among the leaders in this area of research. Exporting these technologies and knowledge should benefit populations around the world as well as translate into substantial commercial benefits for Canadians. **
