The proposed research program builds on the strengths of the chairholder to expand the application of integrated photonics into the field of neuroscience. The goals of this research are to develop and demonstrate a foundry-manufactured photonic platform for massively parallel, integrated nanophotonic neural probes. The probes will be used for the functional mapping of neuronal connectivity in the cortex, and they can become a new tool in brain activity mapping and optogenetics. The probes overcome the scattering-limited penetration depth of optical imaging techniques and enable an integration density not presently available in commercial opto-electrodes. This multidisciplinary project will involve collaborators in nanomechanics, bioelectronics, neuroscience, and neurosurgery.
