Diverting materials from waste streams and converting them into valued added products is an important and beneficial goal for society. Additionally, replacing petroleum-based products with bio-based materials will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as reduce pollution by moving towards biodegradable materials. However, there remains a lack of high-performance materials that are sourced for bio-waste streams. One potential waste stream with this untapped potential is waste dairy products. Here, a project is proposed that will solve technical issues related to cross-linking casein proteins, the primary protein constituent of dairy products. The project will proceed exploring various cross-linking chemistries as well as linker types and lengths to see which will give the desired properties. The result of this project be a high-performance, bio-based material that will have a range of applications. The raw materials for this process can be harvested from waste streams resulting in upcycling of waste materials and low-cost high-performance materials.**
