Hydrocarbons - raw or transformed into industrial chemicals or consumer products - are highly susceptible to oxidative deterioration, a process mediated by free radicals. As such, radical-trapping antioxidants comprise some of the more important chemical additives to virtually all petroleum-derived materials, from oils, fuels and rubber to plastics, cosmetics and consumer products. The vast majority of the additives used today were developed over half a century ago as unsuccessful efforts to develop novel chemical scaffolds with superior reactivity, but good stability, has lead to stagnation in the development of new technologies. Recent NSERC-funded research on the chemistry of radical-trapping antioxidants in the applicant's laboratories has lead to the conception of a new class of antioxidant compounds that have exciting commercial potential. Herein we propose to undertake a collaborative project with BASF Canada to help develop this technology into a product that could enhance the longevity of multiple BASF products produced in Canada, as well as Canadian petroleum-derived products which rely on BASF additives to ensure their longevity.
