An important aspect of aviation safety is the proper maintenance of airport runways. Indeed, all types of solid or liquid contaminants, from the small nut to the thick layer of snow can cause fatal accidents. This research project focuses specifically on the maintenance of winter runways specifically on deicing products. Although the latter are used in very large quantities, in different dilution forms or even, when they are contaminated by other surrounding fluids. The Montréal airport operations team, ADM, therefore contacted the UQAC's Anti-Icing Materials International Laboratory, AMIL, to gain more knowledge about the performance of these products in order to optimize and reduce the amount used. This reduction will reduce their environmental impact, their damaging impact on certain parts of aircraft and the costs. The LIMA team will then perform a series of performance tests, some of which are already recognized by the industry and others that will be specifically adapted for this project with a wide and varied sampling of deicing products with environmental conditions representative of those prevailing in the field. The project will be divided into 3 objectives, the first of which will focus on the development of a classification grid of products according to the weather conditions coupled with an experimental and numerical simulation of the spreading rates. The second will study the possible effects of chemical contamination of liquid form products. The last objective will study storage conditions for solid-type products in order to reduce losses. Most of the experiments will be done inside the LIMA climate chambers and will be validated, if necessary, at the ADM site. The team will be supplemented by students, meteorological experts, WPred Inc., Nachurs Alpine Solutions and an expert in numerical simulation of icing phenomena from the École des technologies Supérieures, ETS.
