The College of New Caledonia is collaborating with Canfor Corporation (Canfor), Sinclar Group Forest Products Ltd. (Sinclar) and Conifex Timber (Conifex) to develop a mitigation plan through applied research to improve understanding of the current spruce beetle epidemic and its direct impacts to industry and community. The main objective of this research study is to develop various correlations between time since death and key indicators and attributes for fibre quality in spruce beetle-attacked stands. The methodology includes field sampling, tree sampling, cross-dating analysis, and clear wood material testing. The proposed SB shelf life project will enhance CNC's ability to meet the needs of local forest sector partners, develop institutional applied research and innovation capacity, and generate partnerships at new levels of strategy and regional development. Several enhanced technical skills are expected as learning outcomes from student participation in this project: (i) field and tree sampling techniques for clear wood testing, (ii) dendrochronology methods and techniques, (iii) wood physical and mechanical properties testing, and (iv) industry problem-solving expertise.
