Silva Gro Nursery, one of the biggest nurseries in Canada, has partnered the College of New Caledonia to research the feasibility of expanding their production capacity in order to face a new demand for conifer seedlings generated by an increased forest landbase affected by natural disturbances, such as the mountain pine beetle epidemic, the current spruce beetle epidemic and the 2017 and 2018 BC forest fires.**SilvaGro and CNC collaboration has focused on developing vertically staged growing technology allowing a conventional greenhouse to grow on two levels, doubling capacity.**The following knowledge will be transferred from CNC to SilvaGro:**- The system design for the two-level rolling bed**- Collected data for several parameters affecting growth in a greenhouse and potentially being affected by the addition of a second shelving: humidity, light quality, and temperature.**This project will leverage CNC's knowledge in innovative horticulture and forestry techniques, LED technology, and greenhouse operations.
