Nanomaterials for Energy

The population of people on earth is expected to expand to over 9 billion people by 2050. When coupled with increased development, the energy requirements to ensure a secure future for civilization will at least double, according to the most conservative estimates available. Solar energy is the only source of abundant energy available to humanity that can supply the sheer quantities required for a growing population. Alberta is an energy powerhouse, and the program described in this research chair provides a means to build upon this strong foundation, and expand the repertoire of energy sources available for the province, Canada, and to the world. The tools of nanoscience provide a unique opportunity to build, at the atomic and molecular level, the materials that will transform energy from the sun into useable forms, such as electricity, and solar fuels.
