The air pollution challenges facing urban populations changed substantially from coal-blackened and foggy 1950s London to sunny and traffic exhaust-choked 1970s LosAngeles. Now, they are undergoing another dramatic change: as a result of emissionregulations, most vehicular particulate emissions currently arise from non-exhaustsources like brake dust and road wear; in addition, as a result of climate change,urban air quality is increasingly influenced by wildfire particulate emissions. Dr.Styler's research program focuses on the chemical reactivity of these emergingclasses of particulate matter, and thereby provides insight into the air quality,climate, and health challenges that they pose.
