The use of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is gradually increasing in the dairy genetics industry. A significant proportion of bulls and cows of high genetic value are now derived from IVF. There is currently no phenotypic monitoring of these animals although the fertility data, some health and productivity data are recorded by different stakeholders including Valacta. Therefore, there is no structured analysis to link the effects of IVF with the subsequent phenotype despite the amount of data available in bovine and published data in mice and humans. In these species, the phenotypic manifestations of IVF are strangely similar to the observed manifestations that are related to the metabolic status of the mother and therefore suggest that cattle may respond with metabolic programming useful for milk production. We will therefore match (genetic-environment) hundreds (>400) of animals from IVF and compare them to cows from artificial insemination for the parameters of productivity, fertility and longevity (health) from the last 8 years.This project will answer a very important question about the potential benefit or problems associated with the new reproductive technologies, allowing technical adjustments to maximse the value of these tools, and increasing our competitiveness in Quebec and for the export markets.
