The aim of this proposal is to experimentally validate software modules allowing the design and scale up of silicon based quantum computers and sensors. Our industrial partner, NanoAcademic Technologies (Montreal) is currently in the process of developing a Technology Computer Aided Design tool (TCAD) for quantum technology - QTCAD, with focus on simulating silicon based spin qubits for quantum computing hardware. Qubits in silicon can be implemented with atomically positioned dopant atoms. Silicon is an attractive material for quantum computing, as it provides for very long coherence times (i.e. quantum instead of classical properties persist for relatively long times). Furthermore, the vast experience of the semiconductor industry can be harnessed for future scale up.
In this proposal, in collaboration with partners in the UK, we will position dopant atoms in silicon in atomic precise patterns using scanning tunneling microscopy. At McGill, we will use cryogenic atomic force microscopy in a magnetic field to characterize the position and perform spectroscopy on individual and coupled dopant atoms to measure their energy levels as well as coupling strength and quantum characteristics. Comparing the experimental values with the result of the computer simulations will allow validation of the software modules. Each of the two Canadian and two UK partners contribute complimentary and unique expertise needed to achieve our goals.
This international collaboration between academics and companies in Canada and the UK will allow excellent training of students, build strong connections between academics and companies in Canada and the UK in the field of quantum technology and lead to high impact science.
