This research project intends to explore automatic recognition of certified protective apparatus while appliedon a portable electronic device without any physical modification on neither protective apparatus nor electronicdevice. This falls into two research objectives: 1) Protective apparatus identification, i.e. to determine anunknown protective apparatus's identity, and, 2) Protective apparatus authentication (aka, verification) wherethe user claims that a protective apparatus with a certain identity is applied on the electronic device. The focusof our work in the proposal put forth in this application distinguishes itself as it focuses on the recognition ofthe certified protective apparatus on the portable electronic device and is primarily geared towards nomodification to the protective apparatus. This is extremely advantageous compared to the prior arts as it iscomprehensive: it is not limited to those protective apparatus manufacturers that accept to alter theirproduction lines for our protective apparatus recognition goal. Further, it saves time and effort in protectiveapparatus production. The project will benefit from techniques in the applied machine learning domain toextract sensory signals and perform classification on the certified protective apparatus of portable electronicdevices.
