USP Technologies Canada ULC is a chemical treatment company for water and wastewater chemical treatmentapplications. Part of the Danaher Corporation environmental and water quality group, USP is a leadingprovider of peroxygen-based technologies and full-service chemical treatment. Recently, USP has identified amarket need for a Chemical Testing Reactor that will provide real-time analysis of a system's needs which willallow dosing to be properly adjusted based on need rather than assumption. However, the process of chemicaldosing in sewers for mitigating the effects of odor nuisance and corrosion requires a lot of improvement. To achieve an on-line dose control strategy, this collaborative project with Lambton College and USPTechnologies Canada ULC aims to develop a lab-scale sewer simulator that operates in a similar manner tosewage water networks. To do this, testing and validation of the developed strategy and the dynamic modelingprocess in different operating modes will be conducted. A PLC control logic for the dosing strategy will also bedeveloped and implemented. Lastly, full process control and automation of the lab-scale system will beconducted. The overall goal of the project is to develop a modular Chemical Testing Reactor (CTR) that can be deployedon-site and give real-time analysis of the water system. The success of this project will allow USP to enhancetheir existing product line, making it more user-friendly and widely adaptable. USP will deploy the solution ona commercial scale and as a result, it is estimated that up to 2-3 full-time employment positions will begenerated in sales, marketing, training, and production of the CTR units at USP. The project will also lead topotentially $200,000-$300,000 per year in annual revenues. The potential incorporation of CTR in wastewatersystems will also benefit Canada by reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs) from these systems.
