Sensors and Communication Technologies for Industrial Internet of Things Applications

Through partnerships with industry, government, and academia Fleming College will expand research activities that lead to the design, development, prototyping, and improvement of sensors and communications technologies for use in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) marketplace. The global IIoT market is expected to value at USD 933.62 billion by 2025. The College will be part of an IIoT ecosystem, helping Canadian SMEs to access the expertise and platforms that will allow them to connect and commercialize their technologies. For their customers or end-users, the benefits of an IIoT-deployed technology include informed asset management, cost savings, improved efficiencies, automation, supply chain optimization, predictive maintenance, and increased revenue. Fleming researchers will help industry partners solve challenges related to the deployment, optimization, integration, and scaling of their technology. Results of this research will have applications in Canadian industries including: manufacturing, municipal asset management, utilities, agriculture, mining, and more. To support the above applied research program, Fleming College is applying to the NSERC-CFI Joint Initiative to fund research infrastructure related to the IE Build. To best support the research activities, an existing space will be retrofitted to create an IIoT deployment lab solely dedicated to applied research. The fully equipped laboratory will contain equipment for developing and analyzing innovative communication technologies and sensors, and serve as a trial platform for prototypes before full-scale demonstrations and deployment.
