CMQ has become one of the most successful CCTTs and a leading player in the metallurgical sector, particularly in aluminum processing. CMQ offers services to more than 200 companies annually. To promote aluminum processing, as part of the Québec Aluminum Development Strategy, CMQ embarked on a major investment project of 12 M$, at the request of the government of Québec. Indeed, the infrastructure to be installed at the CMQ in 2021-2022 will include two semi-industrial rolling mills as well as a semi-solid rheocasting-type moulding cell. This proposal will enable companies to accelerate the development of new advanced applications (either material or process-based). It makes innovation accessible to an entire industry, including several companies that would never have taken the risk or had the physical and financial means to benefit from these technological advances. In aluminum rolling, research projects will target alloy development, new applications, thermoforming, etc. Companies identified to participate to the initiative are Rio Tinto, Verbom, BRP, Manac, Nature Alu, Bell Helicopter Textron. On another hand, semi-solid aluminum casting is an efficient solution to produce high integrity parts. This process allows for improved component performance for structural applications, significant improvement in mechanical properties and improved mould life. Companies identified to participate to the initiative are Dyna-Tool, Foseco, Fiat Chrysler Automotive, ADC Technologies and BRP. Finally, regarding additive manufacturing and welding, research will target aluminum powder development for LPBF, wire arc additive manufacturing process development and robotic welding for versatile welding cells with company as Maadi Group, Rio Tinto, Manac, Bell-Textron and Alcoa. Through the affiliation of CMQ with CÉGEP de Trois-Rivières and its collaborations with several university researchers, this proposal will also help train HQP who are already in great demand countrywide.
