Recent advances in nanomaterials research have seen remarkable achievements and a demonstrated potential; however, widespread implementation of such materials into mainstream technology has not been realized. In particular, sustainable routes for synthesis of low-cost, environmentally benign nanomaterials has not been explored in significance. Our focus is to develop a research program which emphasizes three key elements of sustainable nanomaterials: 1) Low-cost nano-platforms for sensing, constructed both of and with high-abundance green materials 2) Creation of enhanced photovoltaics and catalysts using green design principles and 3) Biodegradable platforms for continual analyte monitoring in remote and / or resource-limited settings, with an aim to improve global health.
