Digital gaming both benefits and harms players. The problem is that researchers, designers, policy makers, and players cannot differentiate between beneficial gaming that improves wellbeing and pathological gaming that damages quality of life. Mandryk will discover and model the complex relationships between gaming and its effects and leverage these relationships to design new games. Relevant for academia and industry, she will improve understanding of the positive and negative effects of gaming. She will create novel games and interfaces that provide compelling social game experiences, that can assess wellbeing at a scale not currently possible, and that improve quality of life.
