Reducing the greenhouse gas emission from modern energy systems is critical to manage climate change. For systems such as heavy duty or marine engines, where electrification is not yet possible, natural gas can be an attractive alternative. For example, natural gas (NG) and NG from renewable sources (RNG) can result in lower carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur and particulate emissions than conventional fuels. Several fueling technologies exist for natural gas and RNG; however, the engine performance and exhaust emissions are closely related to the engine operating strategy, and excessive methane emissions results in an increase greenhouse gas emissions. In this work we aim to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas and RNG engines using a combination of optical and multi-cylinder engine experiments, as well as field measurements of greenhouse gas emission from in-use engines. This will provide technologies for low greenhouse gas emission transportation systems. Furthermore, the emission measurements will provide a basis for effective emission and air quality policy decisions for emerging engine fueling technologies.
