This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Previous work ( GCRC protocol 0451) in adolescent white and black girls and boys has established the dietary calcium intake that optimizes skeletal calcium retention in these groups. The protocol involves a 2 week calcium balance at Purdue with calcium kinetics performed on the GCRC on day one of the balance. Two balances are performed one month apart on each subject on a high and low calcium intake with the range of calcium intakes lying between 600-2300 mg/d. We now propose to study these same relationships in Chinese American adolescent girls and boys. The primary aim is to establish the calcium requirement that optimizes skeletal calcium retention in Asian girls and boys. A secondary aim is to compare the data in Asians with those we have already collected in American whites and Blacks The long term goal is to establish the optimal calcium intake during periods of rapid growth in order to build peak bone mass and reduce lifelong risk of osteoporosis.
