This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a syndrome of unexplained chronic hyperandrogenism (excess male hormone) in females. This research consists of determining the possible genetic basis for PCOS and its variants. The specific aim is to test the hypothesis that activating variants of type 5 17¿-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase contribute to hyperandrogenism in women and that a specific phenotype is associated with these variants.
