This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Maternal chorioamnionitis and the resulting neonatal inflammatory response predisposes neonates to adverse outcomes icluding: chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhage, periventricular leukomalacia, and cerebral palsy. Although the diognosis of chorioamnionitis is most accurately made by placental pathology, potential neonatal treatment with early anti-inflammatory medictaions would require a more rapid diagnostic measure of chorioamnionitis. We propose to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of gastric aspirate fluid obtained within four hours of birth as a predictor of histologic chorioamnionitis.
