The study of muscle contraction is important to understand most functions of life, including locomotion, heart beating and lung mechanics. While the mechanisms of contraction may lie in sub-cellular structures, their study has been challenging as the necessary technology is not readily available. The goal of this proposal is to improve a system that we developed for studying myofibrils (sub-cellular muscle structures) so it becomes broadly used in the academic and private sectors, by experienced and non-experienced scientists. The system would allow experimentation of muscle molecules, DNA/RNA strands, and in the future the testing of "artificial muscles".
