State-of-the-art miniature sensor technology such as MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) has opened up new cost-effective opportunities to gain deeper insight into the particular dynamics of athletes as they perform complex kinematic motions in the outdoor environment. The proposed project is a new collaborative venture between Park's research group at SFU and Recon Instruments Inc. ("Recon") in Vancouver, BC. Recon develops and markets a display system for goggles worn in active sports such as skiing and snowboarding. The aim of the proposed project is to add novel capabilities to Recon's instrumented goggles by providing real-time measurements of key performance variables associated with jumping, such as airtime (i.e. the time duration between taking-off and landing), horizontal distance, and vertical height/drop. As compared to the current video-based approaches restricted to the use of pre-set confined areas, the unconstrained accessibility of this information in real-time by simply wearing the goggles will greatly benefit the user as a training or performance evaluation tool.
