The capacity for humans to adapt their behaviour to incoming sensory information is extraordinary. Adaptation during auditory-motor behaviours such as speaking, playing a musical instrument, or clapping to a beat is fast and effortless. Audience members, for example, who begin to clap are often unsynchronized (out-of-phase) but quickly align with each other, forming an in-phase, coherent pattern. This phase coherence characterizes our ability to adapt to the wide range of acoustic changes that characterize music and speech. Brain activity during coordination tasks demonstrates phase coherence as well, as neural networks form synchronous oscillatory patterns over time. Unfortunately, current scientific theory is based almost exclusively on brain-behaviour measurements from (single) individuals, often in response to computer-generated (non-adaptive) stimuli. This limitation has two negative outcomes: a) we have neglected to study temporal adaptation that is specific to human interactions; and b) we lack the data with which to adequately test phase-coherence models of brain-behaviour interactions between individuals.
