Trudell Medical International (TMI) is an industry leading medical device company that specializes in respiratory therapy devices. Their products improve the lives of patients with respiratory disease across Canada and internationally. TMI's respiratory therapy devices boost patient lung function. Their effective at-home treatments relieve the burdens imposed on hospitals and, in general, more easily allow sufferers to return to their lives and contribute to society. This Engage Grant looks at understanding surface properties of a drug delivery system whose efficiency is related to the retained liquid of its medication cup. Changing the wettability of the surface will allow one to reduce the retained liquid and improve the drug delivery performance of the device. In a related area, the surfaces of the Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure device
encounter friction as the device is used. A thorough understanding of the chemistry and morphology of these surfaces will be ascertained by employing analytical techniques such as atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle.
Based on the results from this NSERC Engage project, we will recommend solutions to the specified wettability and friction issues and look for further collaboration with the company in order to develop technologies that benefit these medical devices. TMI is a major manufacturer of medical devices that assist people with respiratory problems and resolution of these issues will provide them with a competitive advantage and benefit their customers across Canada. Our propose project is well-defined to help improved the design of these products.
