It is well known that the optimal management of cold start is crucial to fulfill present and future emission legislation. Cold start emissions are causing up to 80% of our harmful vehicle emissions. Light vehicle OEMs are challenged to meet these targets (Emissions standards will tighten by 45% from 2016 - 2025. Standard catalytic converters work really well once they get up to 300°C temperature (light off temperature). However, this may take up to 5 minutes. A well-established way to reach the catalyst light-off temperature fast enough to fulfill emission limits consists of artificially increasing the exhaust gas temperature. Recently (in 2013), Advanced Technology Emission Solutions Inc. (ATES) developed an alternative way to warm up the catalytic converter in a fast and efficient manner using cost efficient induction-heated catalytic converter called SI-Cat (Patent US1445280 & US14452812). The objective of this project is to develop a capability for the electrothermal modeling of an ATES SI-Cat system in conjunction with considerations for electrical supply, distribution of wires within the ceramic substrate, size of the ceramic substrate, material choices for wire, and control strategy. The objective of the electrothermal modeling process is to create models that represent the magnetic and thermal behavior of the physical system. This project will pull together talents from Ryerson University and ATES and take the advantage of the resources of Ryerson including experienced researchers, energetic and goal-driven graduate students and the track record of excellence of ATES to jointly develop and optimize the electrothermal modeling of an ATES SI-Cat system. This project will provide a unique platform for university and industry to collaborate to advance induction-heated catalytic converter of ATES Inc. In addition, this project will provide a rich environment for the training of HQP by having them engaged in development and design of industry-caliber products.
