Per the Government of Ontario, Toronto Hydro-Electric System (THES) Limited is currently completing smart meter installation for its 730,000 residential customers. Smarts meters encourage shifts in electricity usage to times of low demand via time-of-use pricing. Given the cost and scope of the Smart Metering Initiative it is, however, important to consider ways other than price-tier differentials in which this technology can be leveraged to benefit stakeholders, including electricity customers. The proposed project will therefore develop an instrument capable of evaluating the most important determinants of residential electricity consumption, thereby enabling THES to better utilize their vast smart meter dataset, and to prioritize and target 'low hanging fruit' with respect to peak load reduction. To achieve this, innovative techniques from building physics principles (e.g., overall heat loss coefficient, time constant heat loss) as well as general building characteristics (e.g., age of building) will be used to contextualize smart meter data.
