As the rise of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is becoming a worldwide problem, there is an urgent need for reducing antibiotic use in veterinary animals. The development of needle-free and cost-effective vaccines that trigger long-lasting immunity in large animals is challenging partly due to the lack of safe and potent adjuvants. Lilly Creek Vaccine (LCV) Inc. is developing new vaccine formulations that are particularly useful for mucosal vaccination. In partnership with LCV, we are going to study the potential of a group of structurally-defined adjuvants that are able to activate the immune system by interacting with a certain receptor molecule known as NOD2. After the chemical synthesis of these compounds, they will be evaluated for adjuvant activity in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The research is expected to provide new vaccine adjuvant candidates for further development. The proposed research will also facilitate the establishment of research collaboration between the
applicant and LCV and generate new intellectual properties in developing veterinary health care products. The research outcome may eventually translate into significant economic and social benefits to Canada.
