Perfluorinated hydrocarbons (PFC) are used in surfactants, insecticides, aqueous fire-fighting foams, non-stick coatings, and spill repelling textiles. They are also persistent pollutants that are ubiquitous in the environment, have been found globally, polluting areas far from the original contamination source, and bioaccummulate. While no regulations governing PFC remediation are in place, they are expected in the near future. Unfortunately, the chemical structure and properties of PFCs that make them attractive for their many applications also introduce significant challenges related to their remediation. As such, developing new, innovative and effective remediation strategies is of paramount importance. The Veinot Research Team specializes in, and have demonstrated that, silicon-based materials have diverse and tailorable reactivity. The scientific literature suggests these same silicon systems may offer a convenient approach to PFC remediation. This project combines the material development expertise of the Veinot Research Team and analytical development skills of Paracel Labs to establish a material and methodology to address environmental PFC contamination.
