The dramatic increase in bio-oil production, has resulted in millions of tonnes of different types of co-products (eg. canola pellets, cold-pressed cakes, extracted cold-pressed cakes, canola meal) from different bio-oil processing methods such as chemical extraction, cold processing, and combined cold pressing and chemical extraction. To date, little systematic study has been carried out to study structural, chemical and nutritive features in feedstock and co-products from bio-processing using advanced synchrotron and globar technology in relation to nutrient delivery and supply to animals. This research aims to reveal the molecular chemistry of intrinsic structures in both feedstock and co-products and to detect the sensitivity of feed intrinsic structure to bio-processing and processing-induced changes on nutrient supply and delivery to animals and study association of feed intrinsic molecular structure with nutrient supply and delivery from feedstocks and co-products from bio-oil processing. The proposed research program will be completed in three phases. In Phase I, we will determine chemical and nutrient profiles, digestible, metablizable and net energy values and reveal unique molecular structural features of the feedstocks and co-products from bio-oil processing. In Phase II, we will study N-to-energy synchronization and the impact of the bio-oil processing involving physical, chemical and heat treatments on N metabolism, accumulation and microbial protein synthesis. In Phase III, we will determine nutrient supply and delivery (truly absorbed nutrient supply, Feed Milk Value) from the feedstock and co-products from bio-oil processing to dairy cattle and study association of bio-oil processing induced molecular structure changes with nutrient supply and delivery. It is anticipated that the proposed program will provide with a greater understanding the structure-animal interface and advance our current and basic nutrition knowledge and benefit to bio-oil processing, feed and livestock industries.
