Anxiety Detection and Classification of Adults with Developmental Disabilities using a Collaborative Service Robot

Developmental disabilities (DD) are a diverse group of conditions caused by physical and/or mentalimpairments. This project focuses on developing a collaborative service robot to help Canadians living withDD to reach their personal goals and achieve greater independence. Namely, the objective of this research is todevelop a robot architecture that can detect anxiety, which is commonly felt by people with DD, and then adopta calming behavior to minimize anxiety and agitation. A robust user anxiety detection and classificationmethod will be developed using different communication modes, and will be integrated with the service robot.The overall project outcomes will be transferable to health and elder care environments, providing a significantstep towards personalizing the robot for clients and caregivers to improve social interactions.
