The equipment I am requesting is for an electrophysiological recording rig. The electrophysiological recordings we perform are electrical recordings from brain cells, which are used to measure the activity levels of cells, the flow of electrical current through specific membrane ion channels, and to measure the communication between different brain cells in a neural network. The research we are conducting aims to determine the role of the Vitamin A metabolite, retinoic acid, on memory formation. Blocking retinoic acid signaling pathways impedes memory formation in species from molluscs to humans. However, very little is known about how retinoic acid affects synaptic connections within networks of the brain. The equipment I have requested is essential recording equipment required to upgrade an electrophysiological recording rig to allow me to continue with my NSERC-funded research. A large component of my NSERC research is to investigate how retinoic acid contributes to memory formation, and specifically the changes that occur during the neural networks during behavioural changes.
