The Bamfield Marine and Sciences Centre (BMSC) is a world-class research facility located in Barkley Sound adjacent to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Five western research universities (Victoria, British Columbia, Simon Fraser,Calgary, and Alberta) established BMSC as a partnership in 1970 at the request of the National Research Council (NRC) to create a national facility capable of supporting coastal and marine research of the highest caliber. BMSC is internationally recognized as among the very best such facilities in the world. No other facility offers researchers such a diverse array of organisms and habitats alongside such an extensive and versatile infrastructure. External referees have described BMSC as a "jewel".
