The development of biomimetic human tissue models is central to biomedical engineering and drug discovery for screening the toxicity of chemicals and therapeutics. This research involves the multidisciplinary engineering of the skin and liver tissues using sensor-integrated multiorgan-on-chip platforms. This interdisciplinary work is novel due to the combination of sophisticated biomedical engineering techniques for the development of skin and liver tissues, integrated sensors, as well as characterizing the crosstalk of interconnected skin and liver in response to drugs. Completion of this work will contribute to the understanding of toxicity of cosmetics and dermal drugs on the skin and liver tissues.
