Sitka is a Canadian surfboard, clothing and lifestyle brand, manufacturing purposeful goods for exploring and**enjoying the natural world. The goal of Sitka is to inspire accountability to nature and move toward a balance**between conservation and consumerism. In order to maintain its leadership position and enact systems of**giving back when utilizing Earth's resources, Sitka is seeking new design and materials concepts for the**development of the next generation of cotton-based products. Cotton is the most abundantly produced natural**fibre with an estimated 25.35 million tonnes expected to be produced in 2017/2018, it is not without**controversy in regards to both environmental and social impact, such as extensive water use and use of**pesticides. In order to reduce the amount of virgin cotton produced each year, a few organizations have looked**into recycling cotton as a solution. There are several challenges posed by recycling cotton into value added**products and this proposal seeks to address these challenges by finding innovative solutions. The University of**British Columbia (UBC) has a wide range of fibre forming facilities in the Advanced Fibrous Materials**Laboratory (AFML). In this study, we propose to combine Sitka's expertise and knowledge in cotton apparel**design and production with the know-how and capabilities in fibrous materials in AFML at UBC to explore the**feasibility of recycling cotton-based apparel products.
